Notre gîte

When you are out at sea, in the Bay of the Somme, you need to look out for the ‘amer’ (the daymark), so that you can easily find the way back to port.

And so, I would like to suggest to you our ‘own way to port’ – our house in Picardy:

This gite is not to be found on a maritime chart, but in the centre of the seaside resort of Le Crotoy, a stone’s throw from the magnificent Bay of the Somme, classified as a ‘Grand Site de France’.

The area

So welcome to the bay of the Somme, extending over 7,000 ha, the site is a protected nature reserve called ‘le Parc Ornithologique du Marquenterre’ (the Ornithological Park of Marquenterre). The diversity of the flora and fauna will delight nature lovers. The immensity of the wild and supervised beaches (the only beaches in the North of France with a southerly aspect), will awaken you to the zen-like rhythm of the tides.

The Bay of the Somme offers you:

Aquatic activities: sailing, kite-surfing, sand yachting, canoeing, (where one can get close to a seal colony), and boat excursions;
Various and numerous other trips: a large network of cycling routes, hiking paths, rides on ‘Hensons’ – an indigenous race of horse), and visits to the coast of Picardy using the famous steam train

Whether you are sporty, a hunter, a fisherman, or simple like a stroll the Bay of the Somme will reward you with many surprises. Lovers of art and history will not be disappointed, (many famous writers and artists have visited). In return all that this precious and fragile environment asks it that it be preserved and respected...
